The mechanics differ in the details, but the principle is the same: the carrier tracks your spending over a rolling period, assigns you to a tier, and applies that tier\u2019s percentage on top of your base incentives. Ship more, and the percentage goes up. Ship less for a few months, and it quietly goes down.<\/p>\n<p>That makes earned discounts the one item in your pricing that you can adjust without even speaking to your sales rep\u2014and the one that erodes the fastest when sales volume drops. Here\u2019s how the system actually works, and where the money is.<\/p>\n<h2>What an earned discount actually is<\/h2>\n<p>Your carrier agreement typically combines three types of discounts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Guaranteed (base) discounts.<\/strong> Fixed percentages applied to every shipment that meets the criteria for a specific service, weight band, and zone. These percentages do not change.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Earned or tier-based incentives.<\/strong> An additional percentage that depends on how much you've spent recently. These percentages change with each measurement period.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ancillary concessions.<\/strong> Waivers or reductions on residential, delivery area, additional handling, and similar charges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Carriers introduced tiered incentives to address a shortcoming in the older zone-and-weight model, which allowed a shipper to secure deep discounts while giving the carrier only a small portion of its total parcel volume. Tiered incentives reward the entire portfolio, not just one strategic route.<\/p>\n<h2>The number that determines your tier<\/h2>\n<p>Almost every tier table is based on <strong>high transportation costs<\/strong> \u2014 the published base rate for the shipment, before fuel surcharges, before ancillary charges, before duties and taxes, and before your own discounts are applied. This is more important than it sounds. A shipper reviewing a monthly invoice for $90,000 may only be reporting $55,000\u2013$65,000 in qualifying transportation charges, because fuel and accessorials are deducted first.<\/p>\n<p>The measurement window is usually a <strong>rolling 52-week average<\/strong>, on an annualized basis. Consider everything above as a general outline of how the mechanism works, not as a quote\u2014your own agreement and your account representative are the only authoritative sources for your specific figures.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The residential and delivery-area line is the one worth reviewing. If your mix consists largely of e-commerce and residential shipments, a UPS portfolio can appear significantly larger than the equivalent FedEx portfolio for the same volume of shipments\u2014which is exactly why the two carriers\u2019 tier tables cannot be compared side by side.<\/p>\n<h2>The Tier Trap: Volume That Gets You Nowhere<\/h2>\n<p>Two positions on a tiered pricing table cost shippers real money, and it's easy to stay in either one for a year without even realizing it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Just below a threshold.<\/strong> If the next tier begins at a spending level that you fall short of by a few percent, every package you ship will earn the lower percentage. Closing that gap is usually less expensive than it seems: simply moving a single recurring shipping route, a returns program, or a second business unit to the same account can be enough.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At the top of the standings.<\/strong> Once you reach the highest tier, additional volume does not increase that line item. Growth beyond that point should be converted into something else\u2014deeper base discounts, waivers of ancillary fees, or a better minimum charge\u2014rather than left on the table.<\/p>\n<h2>Five Steps to Take You to the Next Level<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Consolidate accounts.<\/strong> Separate account numbers across divisions, brands, or warehouses split a single qualifying transaction into several smaller ones. Consolidation is often the single largest tier advancement available.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Import third-party data and aggregate the volume into your account.<\/strong> Shipments billed to someone else generally do not count toward your base, and third-party billing adds its own percentage-based surcharge.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check which modes are aggregated.<\/strong> If your agreement includes freight or international shipping in addition to small parcels, the volume you already ship may qualify but is simply not being credited.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Know your window before you cut the volume.<\/strong> Based on a 13-week measurement, a deliberate slowdown in January could cause you to drop a tier by spring. Include them on a single line of a monthly report.
