It is freight class. And in 2026, that number is being calculated differently than it was two years ago.

The National Motor Freight Traffic Association restructured the NMFC classification system based on density. The type of commodity no longer determines the class the way it used to. If your product is light and bulky, that change is costing you money right now, and most shippers have not recalculated a single SKU since the new system was implemented.

Here's what has changed, how to calculate your actual class, and the packaging adjustments that cause a shipment to be downgraded to a lower tier.

What Freight Class Actually Is

Freight class is a number between 50 and 500 assigned to every shipment transported as less-than-truckload. Class 50 is the least expensive to ship. Class 500 is the most expensive. The carrier applies its rate table to your freight class, weight, and route, then adds ancillary charges.

Four factors have historically defined this class: density, stowability, handling, and liability. The modernization decisively shifted the emphasis of that formula toward density—pounds per cubic foot—for the majority of commodities.

In practical terms: a pallet of ceramic tile and a pallet of foam inserts of the same weight are no longer even close in price, and the price gap is wider than it used to be.

The density scale and the 13 tiers

The revised framework expanded from 11 density breaks to 13. Each tier maps a pounds-per-cubic-foot range directly to a class. More tiers mean finer granularity—which has both advantages and disadvantages. Dense freight that used to be overclassified now receives a better rate. Light freight that used to fall comfortably into Class 100 now moves up to Class 125 or higher.

Density (pounds per cubic foot)

Typical class

Relative cost

Example commodity

50 and older

50

Lowest

Bricks, tiles, and heavy machinery parts

30 to under 50

55–65

Low

Canned goods, bottled liquids

22.5 to less than 30

70

Low-mid

Boxed hardware, tooling

15 to less than 22.5

77.5–85

Mid

Books, packaged food containers

10.5 to less than 15

92.5–100

Mid-high

Small appliances, packaged clothing

8 to less than 10.5

110–125

High

Furniture components, plastics

Under 6

200–500

Highest

Foam, empty containers, lampshades

Classes and bands are for reference only. The actual class applied is determined by your carrier’s published tariff and your negotiated agreement.

The number most shippers get wrong

Density is not the density of your product. It is the density of the shipping unit as submitted — pallet included, overhang included, and the empty space above your cartons included.

The formula:

Measure the length, width, and height of the loaded pallet at the extremes, including the wrap and any overhang.

Multiply the three by 1.728 to get cubic feet.

Divide the total weight (product + pallet + packaging) by cubic feet.

Worked example: A pallet measuring 48 × 42 × 60 inches and weighing 620 pounds. Its volume is 120,960 cubic inches, or 70 cubic feet. Its density is 8.85 pounds per cubic foot—which falls within the Class 110 to 125 range.

Now reduce the size of the same shipment to 48 × 40 × 48 inches by removing void fill and restacking. The volume drops to 53.3 cubic feet. The density rises to 11.6. You have moved into the 92.5–100 range. Same product, same weight, one class tier cheaper—and on a route priced at $480 for Class 125, a drop to Class 100 typically yields a 15 to 25 percent savings.

What a reclassification Actually Costs

Across all shippers, the reform was roughly cost-neutral—the average impact was a swing of about 2 to 3 percent in either direction. That average masks the real story.

Freight Profile

Management

Typical impact

Dense, previously overclassified by commodity

Down a tier

5–15% cheaper

Average density, well-packed

No change

Flat

Light and bulky, Class 100 → 125

Move up a tier

20–35% is more expensive

Very low density, less than 6 lbs/ft³

Up two or more levels

40%+ is more expensive

If you ship foam, textiles, plastic housings, assembled furniture, empty bottles, or anything else that fills a pallet without weighing much, you’re in the group that pays more. A shipper moving 30 LTL loads a month at an average rate of $520, subject to a 25 percent reclassification premium, is paying roughly $3,900 more per month—$46,800 a year—for freight that hasn’t changed.

Five moves that drag the class back down

1. Eliminate the empty space above the cartons

Height is measured to the top of the load. A pallet stacked to 60 inches with 8 inches of space under the wrap is classified as a 60-inch pallet. Restack the pallet to its actual product height. This is the fastest and cheapest solution available.

2. Remove the overhang

An inch of overhang on each side of a 48 × 40 pallet increases the volume and, separately, exposes the load to damage claims. Use the correct pallet footprint for your carton dimensions rather than forcing the other way around.

3. Redesign the carton, not just the pallet

If your master carton contains 30 percent air, every pallet you build will suffer from that inefficiency. Right-sizing at the carton level compounds the problem: fewer cartons per pallet layer, more layers, and higher density.

4. Consolidate partial pallets

Two half-height pallets count as two shipping units with two sets of dimensions. One full pallet of the same goods carries the same weight in a smaller total cubic volume—often one full class better—and results in one fewer handling unit on the bill of lading.

5. Compare your bill of lading with the actual shipment

Carriers remeasure packages using dimensioning equipment at the terminal. If your BOL lists 48 × 40 × 48 and the scanner reads 48 × 42 × 57, you’ll be charged a reclassification adjustment plus, with many carriers, an inspection or correction fee. Measure the pallet you’re actually shipping, not the pallet listed in your item master.

When Parcel Still Wins

Freight class only matters once your shipment is actually on a pallet. For shipments weighing less than about 150 pounds, parcel shipping is usually cheaper than LTL and always offers more predictable transit times. The break-even point varies depending on your negotiated parcel discounts, your dimensional divisor, and the route, so run the comparison using your own numbers rather than relying on a rule of thumb.

The honest test: price the same shipment in three different ways—as multiple parcels, as a single LTL pallet, and as a hundredweight or multiweight parcel (if your carrier offers that option). For medium-weight shipments consisting of multiple boxes, the result often surprises people.

The audit worth conducting this quarter

Retrieve your LTL invoices from the last 90 days. For each shipment, compare the class you selected with the class you were billed for. Any discrepancy indicates a reclassification, and each one is a sign that a SKU in your catalog has incorrect dimensions.

Next, take your top ten LTL SKUs by volume, measure an actual loaded pallet of each, and calculate the density. Anything within one pound per cubic foot of a tier boundary represents a packaging project with a measurable return on investment.

Are you paying more for the same pallets than you did last year? ShipPayLess It audits your LTL and parcel invoices, flags every reclassification and correction charge, and shows you which SKUs are just one packaging change away from a lower-cost class.

Freight class 2026 is now determined by density, not commodity.
