Most shippers who are affected by the new USPS hazardous materials fees<\/strong> They had no idea they were shipping hazardous materials in the first place. That's the whole problem.<\/p>\n

On July 12, 2026, the USPS introduced a $50 noncompliance fee for commercial packages found to contain undeclared hazardous materials, plus a $7.50 hazmat handling fee for Priority Mail shipments carrying properly declared dangerous goods. There is also a $0.25 automated penalty that is triggered by a checkbox\u2014one you may not even know exists.<\/p>\n

The $0.25 fee is the one that catches people off guard<\/h3>\n

This is the sneakiest of the three. You can package the item perfectly, apply the correct labeling, and still be charged\u2014because the penalty is tied to the digital<\/em> declaration, not the physical item. If your labeling software has a \"hazmat\" checkbox and no one checks it, the fee applies automatically to every single package.<\/p>\n

At a quarter each, it sounds trivial. But at 400 packages a month, that adds up to $100 a year in paperwork errors\u2014and worse, it flags your account as a shipper who isn't declaring shipments properly.<\/p>\n
